CUNA Mutual Alerts of New Phishing Scam for "Teacher of the Year"

In efforts to scam another group of individuals, phishers are targeting nominees for "Teacher of the Year." In this scam attempt, recipients are notified by mail that they have been nominated by a former student as "teacher of the year." The letter advises them to call and verify their phone number/fax number, name, and age. During the call, people are asked whether they have a Home Equity Line of Credit. As noted in previous risk alerts, Home Equity Lines of Credit have been targeted in scams involving credit unions, including those with strong security procedures.

IRS Warns of New Scams Using the IRS Name; Advance Payment Scams Starting

The Internal Revenue Service today warned taxpayers to beware of several current e-mail and telephone scams that use the IRS name as a lure. The IRS expects such scams to continue through the end of tax return filing season and beyond.
