The Beginning
Tol-Sun Federal Credit Union was chartered on December 28,
1950. At that time, the field of
membership was opened to the Sun Oil Company employees located
in Toledo, Ohio.
The 10 charter members of the
Credit Union are:
Frank T.
Gembolis
Orlyn W. Jensen
Donald C. Craine
Paul Retzke, Jr.
Chester T. Lannen |
Charles W.
Pitzen
Robert L. Fondessy
R. J. Sayers
Harry F. Rumer
Kenneth D. McElroy |
These men contributed money to
form the Credit Union, which started with $100 in assets, kept
in a cigar box. At the end of the first year of business, the
Credit Union had $98,189 in total assets.
Growth through the 1960s
Tol-Sun Federal Credit Union continued to grow and prosper
during the early 1960's. In 1964, the Credit Union reached the
$1 million mark in total assets. In 1968, the Board of
Directors amended the Credit Union's by-laws and opened the
field of membership to include Sun retirees, and family
members of all existing members.
Expansion in the 1970s
Another amendment was made to the by-laws in 1971 to allow
Sun Oil Company employees anywhere in Ohio, Michigan and
Indiana to join the Credit Union. That year Tol-Sun reached $2
million in assets.
Tol-Sun began processing
financial and teller transactions on a batch data processing
system, provided by the Ohio Credit Union League, in 1973. In
1975, the Credit Union celebrated its 25th anniversary with
total assets exceeding $3.6 million. Assets grew to $5 million
in 1977, reaching $10 million just two years later. This
growth was largely due to the introduction of share draft
accounts in 1978. The Credit Union introduced a new on-line
computer system in 1979 that moved Tol-Sun into a new era of
data processing. By joining the CUNADATA System, the Credit
Union committed itself to providing excellent financial
services in the most efficient manner possible.
New Building and Services in
the 1980s
In July of 1981, there was a groundbreaking ceremony for
building a new Credit Union facility on Woodville Road in
Oregon, Ohio. At that time, the Credit Union had $15 million
in assets. By February of the next year, the new Credit Union
building was ready for occupancy. The Credit Union introduced
both VISA accounts and ATM access in 1983. At the end of 1983,
the Credit Union had $20 million in assets.
There were many structural
changes to the financial industry in 1985. With financial
deregulation, many institutions faced difficult decisions
about their future. That was the year Tol-Sun entered into a
merger agreement with the Sun Employees Credit Union of
Philadelphia, forming Sun Federal Credit Union. The Credit
Union's headquarters remained in Toledo with two additional
locations, one in Philadelphia and the other in Radnor,
Pennsylvania. During that same year, Sun Federal's assets grew
to $25 million.
Financial Planning For Our
Members
Sun Federal introduced the MEMBERS Financial Services program
(known as PLANAMERICA at the time) in 1988. Through this
program, members have the opportunity to receive professional
financial management advice to organize their financial
affairs and plan for the future. In 1996, Jim Simone of Simone
Financial Services, began to serve the Eastern Sun Federal
members. In April of 1991, Sun Federal opened an office at the
Philadelphia Refinery to service the Philadelphia Refinery
employees and their families.
Merger with Credit Unions
Significant structural changes occurred within Sun Company at
the end of 1991. Sun Company headquarters were moved from
Building One to Building Two within the Radnor complex,
requiring Sun Federal to investigate other opportunities in
order to maintain an office in Radnor. The opportunity became
available for Sun Federal to merge with the TV Guide Credit
Union, located in the Radnor Complex. As a result of the
merger, on February 1, 1992, Sun Federal gained 1500 members,
$2 million in assets and a satellite office in the TV Guide
Building.
As a result of Sun Company's
move, Sun Federal also relocated the Radnor office. In April
of 1992, the Credit Union's office in Building One moved to
Building Two. In 1993, the Credit Union became more receptive
to new Select Employee Groups (SEG's). That June, GEM
Industrial of Toledo was the first official SEG to be added to
the Credit Union's field of membership.
Oregon Federal Credit Union
officially merged with Sun Federal on January 1, 1994. Oregon
Federal was a $680,000 asset size Credit Union with 447
members. The Credit Union's field of membership included
current and retired teachers of the Oregon school system.
In 1995, Arrowhead Federal and
Toledo Cloverleaf Federal credit unions merged with Sun
Federal. Both credit unions offered savings and loans to their
members. With the mergers, members gained access to a full
service operation. That same year the opening of the Arrowhead
office occurred.
Defense Supply of Philadelphia
Federal Credit Union's members approved merging with Sun
Federal in August of 1995. DSPFCU had approximately 6700
members and $20 million in assets, bringing Sun Federal's
total assets to over $100 million with more than 20,000
members. In 1999, the military installation moved from South
to North Philadelphia. Sun Federal moved as well, opening the
Northeast Philadelphia office that same year.
Sun Begins the New Century
In 2000, Sun Federal officially became partners with EPAK Atlantic Federal Credit Union in Sinking Spring, Pennsylvania. More than 700 members became family as a result as well as the addition of a new Sun Federal location in Sinking Spring, Pennsylvania. This office later moved to West Lawn. In 2003, the Philadelphia Orchestra Federal Credit Union merged with Sun Federal and then during 2004, the members of St. Anne Mercy FCU voted overwhelmingly to merge with Sun Federal, hence Sun Federal began a presence in West Toledo
In 2004 Sun Federal welcomed members and another office through another merger with Eagle Point Federal Credit Union in Westville, New Jersey.
The Sun Federal Support Center opened in April 2005. The two-story, 15,300 square foot facility in Maumee houses five different SFCU departments and more than 30 employees.
In 2006, the members of Members Capital Credit Union (formerly North
West Federal Credit Union and Toledo Telephone Employees Credit Union, Inc.) voted to approve a partnership with Sun Federal Credit Union.
